ASSP is a charity or a non-profit organization of Portuguese teachers, gathering nursery, elementary and secondary school teachers and university professors. Foreign teachers and professors working and living in Portugal are also accepted as members.
It was founded in 1981 and now has thousands of members.
Its most important aim and activity involve social, humanitarian and cultural work with its members and their relatives.
Specific aims:
»Community and personal integration of elderly, ill and handicapped teachers and professors;
»Development of activities related to social integration and cultural education;
»Support in every situation of social and personal want.
ASSP has been fulfilling these aims through: »Building teacher’s homes and day centres for the support of the elderly – already existing in Aveiro, Lisbon, Oporto and Setúbal; we are now developing projects in Faro, Carcavelos (in the surroundings of Lisbon) and Portalegre; »Creating activity and entertainment centres in every district; »Implementing social and cultural activity programmes (workshops, lectures, courses, gatherings, cultural tours and trips, etc.); »Protocols with institutions, social service firms and others.
ASSP does not depend on the state, political parties, unions or religious institutions. As a non-profit organization, it is social propriety of its members, who elect their direction and control their activity.
Every direction member develops his activity as a volunteer.
ASSP’s national head office is located in Lisbon, at Largo do Monte, in the typical Graça quarter, opposite Senhora do Monte belvedere, where
you can admire one of the most beautiful views over the town.
