Criteria for Candidates for ASSP Office
Who can run?
For Board and Council positions, candidates must be professional members of ASSP. For other positions, candidates must be members (excluding student/emeritus). See position details for additional requirements for each open position.
When does the election take place?
The elections run for 30 days March 1st-March 30th.
How many candidates will be on the slate for each position?
There will be two candidates on the slate for each position. If there is only one candidate interested in a position other than Board and Council VP, the election will remain open until two candidates have been secured or the Nominations & Elections committee approves one candidate, then a special election will take place after society election ends.
When will the slate of candidates be finalized?
The slate will be made final 30 days prior to the election.
Why should I volunteer my time?
Leadership opportunities within your workplace may be limited. This is an alternative leadership avenue for members who can benefit from a vast professional network, leadership training opportunities, and the opportunity to work closely with other safety professionals. Leadership in an ASSP position can create new opportunities for your career.
How large is the time commitment?
It varies depending on the position, but you should expect to dedicate a few hours a week to your elected role. See position description for more information. Position descriptions are available for elected positions.
If I run for an office win can I still be a leader in my chapter?
Only Practice Specialty/Common Interest Group community leaders can also be considered for a leadership position.
I’m already serving in a volunteer role, can I run for another elected position simultaneously?
ASSP strongly encourages elected leaders to finish their current term before running for another position.
I live in Region I but I work in Region II, can I serve in an elected position in Region II?
The member must be a resident of the region that he/she serves in.
What is the process for vacancies in leadership positions?
- President. The President-Elect shall serve for the unexpired term of the President in addition to the term elected to serve.
- President-Elect. The Senior Vice President shall serve for the unexpired term of the President-Elect in addition to the term elected to serve.
- Senior Vice President, Vice President-Finance, Directors-at-Large or Council Vice President. The office shall be filled by a vote of the Board of Directors based on a slate of nominees submitted by the Society Nominations and Elections Committee.
- Regional Vice President. The office shall be filled by ballot of regional members upon a nomination submitted by the Regional Nominations Committee and approved by the Society Nominations and Elections Committee. Except that, if such vacancy occurs within the final year of the term, the vacancy shall be filled by the Deputy Regional Vice President, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.
- Practice Specialty Administrators and Common Interest Group Administrators. The office shall be filled by ballot of Practice Specialty and Common Interest Group members respectively upon nomination approved by the Nominations and Elections Committee: except that, if such vacancy occurs within the final year of the term, the Assistant Administrator shall assume the vacancy, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.
- Area Directors. The office shall be filled by ballot of area members upon a nomination submitted by the Regional Nominations Committee and approved by the Society Nominations and Elections Committee.

John Doe, CSP, is a Safety Director with Amazon. John attended the University of Wisconsin earning a bachelors degree in Management. He is a professional member of ASSP since 2012 belonging to the Greater Chicago chapter. John is also a part of the Management practice specialty since 2014.
John is a regular contributor to ASSP’s Professional Safety Journal, where he enjoys writing articles through the scope of safety management systems.
John has been a general session presenter at the ASSP PDC every year since 2015. He also provides workshops on safety management systems for private clients.
John received the Region IV Safety Professional of the Year Award in 2022.

Although I’ve only been a part of ASSP since 2012, I can recognize the change that has happened throughout the organization. Our members needs have shifted and with that, the organization continues to evolve. Having served as a Chapter President, we have worked closely with the Society to stay on track with our strategic vision. If I am elected, I want to continue to pave that path for the future of ASSP.
I want to continue to develop and grow our future leaders. I recognize the need to engage with our emerging professionals and student members. My focus is on the future of our organization.
