Society Operating Guidelines

About ASSP

Our Society Operating Guidelines describe in detail the manner in which American Society of Safety Professionals is structured and governed. They are intended to accompany and be consistent with ASSP bylaws.

Section 10.3: Practice Specialty and Common Interest Group Formation and Dissolution

I. Community Formation

Communities may be formed and shall operate according to the Standard Operating Guidelines, approved by the Board of Directors. Petitions to form practice specialties or common interest groups shall be approved by the Council on Practices and Standards and the Board of Directors.

Requirements for formation of a practice specialty or common interest group are as follows:
1. Following the business planning process for practice specialties and common interest groups, a written business case shall be submitted by the requesting member(s). " It must include:

  • the business need
  • outline the fit with ASSP mission, vision, values, and strategic plan the purpose and objectives
  • the proposed activities, including a three-year operational plan
  • a list of members willing to serve as elected administrator, assistant administrator, and advisory committee members for the first term of office after the group is approved; officers must be members of ASSP
  • Potential impact and risks

The business plan should be able to demonstrate anticipated member commitment and support for engaging with the new community.
Criteria that will be used in evaluating the petition include:

  • the alignment of the proposed group to ASSP's mission, vision, values and practice specialty/common interest group defined value
  • consideration of other organizations serving this space
  • applicability to the ASSP strategic plan
  • required resources to support
  • and the scope or size of the segment of the total ASSP membership which would be served by the new community .

II. Practice Specialty or Common Interest Group Dissolution

Any community  

  • which is out of compliance with standard operating procedures
  • Or whose activities are contrary to or detrimental to the objectives of ASSP as determined by the Council on Practices and Standards or the Board of Directors
  • or whose membership or engagement falls below a minimum threshold, as determined by the Board of Directors,

shall be placed on probation for a specified period by the Council on Practices and Standards or Board of Directors. A community placed on probation shall show evidence of steps taken to correct the cause of probation. Such evidence shall be reviewed by the Council on Practices and Standards or Board of Directors throughout the probationary period.

If the community has not resolved the cause of probation after the conclusion of the probationary period, the community may be dissolved, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
