The updated OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool App calculates the heat index at outdoor worksites using a smartphone’s geolocation capabilities to pull current weather conditions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites.
Based on the calculated heat index, users receive specific sets of recommendations for protections against the heat. Workers and managers can use these recommendations to adjust their work environment. The app recommendations reflect information found in the NIOSH Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments (2016).
A post on NIOSH's Science Blog explains the heat index and how it can be used to prevent heat-related illnesses. The post also details the various features of the app.
