    Originally adopted in 1991, ANSI B11.20 was the first standard to address the safety of complex automation systems created by integrating individual machines into a larger coordinated system. ANSI B11.20-2017 establishes requirements for the construction, operation and maintenance of integrated manufacturing systems (IMS), with the goal of controlling or eliminating hazards to personnel working on or near them. The standard was recently updated to a third edition (B11.20-2017).

    ANSI/ASSP Z390.1-2017 and Hydrogen Sulfide Training Programs

    Originally created in 1994, ANSI/ASSE Z390.1, Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide Training Programs, was developed to establish appropriate hydrogen sulfide (H2S) safety training for those working in the oil and gas industry. The Z390.1 committee has published a 2017 revision (ANSI/ASSE Z390.1-2017) of the standard, which incorporates information to accommodate the needs of other industries. In addition, changes were made to update references to technology, as well as editorial cleanup.

    ASSE pledges to work with its extensive network of members and stakeholders to help address fatal occupational injuries that increased for the third straight year according to newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 5,190 workplace fatalities in 2016, up 7 percent from 2015.
