Biography

Mrs. Mercy Omoifo- Irefo is a Certified Safety and Environmental Professional, A Certified Fire Risk Assessor, A Lead Auditor and An Academician with  24 years’ experience working in industrial organization’s including, oil and gas, consultancy and training of new breeds with focus on building competencies, skills and abilities. I am presently a Senior Academic Staff of Petroleum Training Institute and also the coordinator of the Fire Academy School of the same institute.

I have a convincing background in Industrial Safety and Environmental Technology and obtained a  Higher Diploma,  Post Graduate Diploma and Master degree in Industrial Safety, Petroleum Economics, Energy and Petroleum Economics from Petroleum Training Institute and  Delta State University, Abraka respectively. Thereafter, had another Master’s Degree in Safety, Health and Environmental Management from the University of South Wales, United Kingdom and PhD in view in the area of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics at college of medicine, University of Cincinnati, Ohio, United State of America.

My areas of specialty are Human Factor and Ergonomics, Project Management, Process Safety, Audit, Management System, Occupational and Behavioral Safety, Confined Space Management, Environmental Management and Fire Risk Assessment. Hence, this has afforded her with the membership of ASSP and 9 different diverse and relevant Professional Bodies within Nigeria and other country.

I served as Nigerian Chapter President, 2020-2021 and also as  Advisory Committee Member in Environmental Practice Specialty as well as other leadership roles in other professional bodies. I loves writing, teaching and mentoring. Happily married with five children.

Platform Statement

I am focused on building a happy professional family through networking using different medium to increase development of professionals within the chapters and region.

I will gravely work with other leaders to develop strategies that can create sustainable plans that will develop the region and chapters therein. I also intend to work with other area directors within the region to create full visibility of Area 2 to ensure a stronger region IX.

I will assist the regional vice president in achieving his goals for the region and also support the chapter leaders within the area in order to create a meaningful and high-quality member experience for chapter members in the area.

As ASSP President, 2020-2021, I developed strategic programs that invested in human capital development through education and enlightenment, played vital role in advocating for safety practice within and outside Nigeria, and organized several workshops, seminars and conferences successfully amidst Corvid. I also established the first HSE E-Library for ASSP Professionals and the general public which had created positive impact among professionals. I will in turn continue in this vein to see that through chapters, HSE Professionals get access to continue professional development. Women in Safety Excellence and Young Emerging Professionals Common interest groups, we're also  established in Nigeria under my year of leadership. This will further be strengthened at the regional level.

Owing to my pass experience and my drive to create positive impact among professionals, I intend to develop a strategy to engage professionals in developing a sustainable membership drive within the region and help train incoming chapter officers so they can understand their roles and responsibilities expected of them.
