Belynda Powers, MBA, M.S., CSP

Biography

Belynda Powers began her safety journey somewhat unexpectedly—when she was “voluntold” to serve as the safety representative for her platoon while serving in the United States Marine Corps. What began as an assignment quickly became a passion, and she carried that commitment to safety throughout her military career. After leaving the Marines, Belynda transitioned into education as a high school math teacher, where she honed her ability to communicate complex ideas in creative and memorable ways—skills that continue to serve her well in safety leadership today. Before leaving the field of education, she earned her MBA from the University of the People, further expanding her leadership and organizational expertise. Belynda returned to the safety profession by joining an energy marketplace company, where she managed compliance for oil and gas, solar, and wind farm sites. Following a COVID-related layoff, she used her time to deepen her technical expertise—earning a Master of Science in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Management from Columbia Southern University, and soon after, achieving the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential. Belynda is an active member of the Central Texas Chapter of ASSP, as well as ChapterWISE, and currently serves as President for her chapter, as well as Deputy RVP and PDC Chairperson for Region III. She continues to advocate for innovation, mentorship, and collaboration in safety leadership—empowering professionals to make safety not just a priority, but a shared value

Platform Statement

My journey in safety began when I was “voluntold” to serve as the safety representative for my platoon in the U.S. Marine Corps—a role that sparked a lifelong passion for protecting people and improving processes. Since then, I’ve served in diverse industries including energy, chemical distribution, and education, always focusing on making safety meaningful, relatable, and sustainable. I lead with creativity and connection—using humor, engagement, and even “safety elves” to help safety messages stick. My approach combines technical expertise with human-centered leadership to foster lasting cultural change. Within ASSP, I’ve stepped up wherever needed—whether serving as Chapter President, PDC Co-Chair, or Regional Deputy RVP. I’ve managed conference logistics, secured event venues, filled unexpected leadership gaps, and mentored upcoming leaders to ensure strong succession planning. I believe in doing what needs to be done, doing it right, and doing it ethically. I understand the challenges of balancing family, career, and professional life. That’s why I’m committed to mentoring others, developing new leaders, and ensuring that our members are supported and valued. Safety professionals deserve to be seen not as “safety police,” but as strategic partners who make organizations stronger. As a leader, I will continue to advocate for growth, collaboration, and innovation within ASSP—helping our Region remain strong and ensuring the Society’s mission continues to thrive, no matter where we are or what challenges we face.
