ASSP: Your Networking Community

Linda TappFor many people, the word “networking” carries the wrong connotation. It can feel transactional, forced or even uncomfortable. Too often, people think about it only when they need a job or a favor. But in reality, networking is something far more meaningful. At its core, it is about building relationships, and there is no better place to do that than within the ASSP community.

Everywhere you look across ASSP, you will find stories of members supporting one another. Our members freely share expertise, open doors and offer guidance. These are not transactional exchanges, but actions that create genuine, lasting connections.

ASSP offers countless opportunities to build those relationships. Whether through virtual events such as the Board Connection series, where members engage directly with Board leaders and peers in small breakout rooms, or in person at chapter meetings and professional development conferences, there are many ways to connect. These experiences foster a sense of belonging within a community united by a shared purpose.

When encouraging others to build their support systems, I often say, “Plant a seed before you need shade.” Meaningful relationships are not formed in moments of need, they are built over time through consistency, curiosity and follow-up. Like professional development, networking is not “one and done.” It requires ongoing attention and intention.

Your network should evolve as you do. Early in your career, you may focus on peers and mentors. As you grow into leadership roles, your network expands to include broader perspectives and experiences. Even when someone’s role differs from yours, maintaining that connection can be invaluable, both for your own growth and for helping others by making meaningful introductions.

I have experienced the power of this firsthand. When I started my consulting business, my network within ASSP was essential. I leaned on fellow members with diverse expertise to fill gaps and deliver stronger outcomes for my clients. Those relationships gave me the confidence to grow my business and reinforced the true value of community.

ASSP’s structure makes building those connections even more accessible. With practice specialties, common interest groups and local chapters, there are many ways to engage with others who share your interests and challenges. With recent changes to our membership model, all members can now join any or all of these groups at no additional cost. This is an incredible benefit, but its value depends on how you use it.

At the same time, networking is not about what you can gain, it is about what you can give. The strongest networks are built on contribution. Ask yourself: How can I add value? How can I support someone else? When you lead with generosity and curiosity, relationships become more authentic and far more impactful.

Looking ahead, events like Safety 2026 in Anaheim offer a unique opportunity to strengthen your network. These gatherings bring together professionals from across the field, people you might not otherwise meet. A single conversation can spark an idea, lead to a collaboration or open an unexpected door. Many of my own conversations at ASSP events have led to new opportunities, partnerships and lifelong friendships.

ASSP is more than a membership association. It is your community. And like any strong community, it thrives on connection. So take the first step. Reach out, get involved and invest in the relationships that will support you, and others, throughout your career.
