ASSP Supports Federal Investment in Worker Safety Through OSHA and NIOSH

Apr 17, 2026

ASSP recently joined a broad coalition of safety and health organizations in urging Congress to maintain strong federal investment in worker safety and health.

In a joint letter to the House and Senate Labor–HHS Appropriations Subcommittees, the coalition called on lawmakers to provide no less than Fiscal Year 2026 funding levels for OSHA and NIOSH in FY2027. These agencies are essential to advancing workplace safety through compliance assistance, research, training and data that safety professionals rely on every day.

For ASSP members, this funding has a direct impact. OSHA’s outreach, education and enforcement programs help organizations manage risk and protect their workers, while NIOSH provides the research, guidance and workforce development that underpin effective safety and health practices across industries.

Maintaining stable funding helps ensure continuity in these programs at a time when workplaces continue to face evolving challenges, including emerging technologies as well as mental health and substance use risks. It also supports the next generation of occupational safety and health professionals through education and research initiatives.

ASSP’s participation in this effort reflects our long-standing advocacy for a strong and effective occupational safety and health system. Federal investment in agencies like OSHA and NIOSH is central to that approach.

Our position statements emphasize the important role of government in setting standards, advancing research and supporting safe and healthy workplaces. This work is carried out every day through OSHA’s programs and NIOSH’s research. They also highlight the value of public-sector programs and partnerships that extend protections across the workforce, which are made possible through sustained funding for these agencies.

These principles reinforce why sustained investment in OSHA and NIOSH matters — not only for national policy, but for the day-to-day work of safety professionals working to prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

ASSP will continue working with coalition partners and policymakers to support practical, evidence-based approaches that strengthen workplace safety and health, including strong and consistent support for OSHA and NIOSH.
