On June 26, 2025, OSHA renewed its National Emphasis Program (NEP) focused on reducing the risk of amputations in manufacturing. This five-year initiative aims to enhance workplace safety by ensuring compliance with safeguards that protect workers operating or maintaining machinery.
The NEP will guide OSHA inspections of manufacturing facilities, with particular attention to the control of hazardous energy and the use of effective machine guarding — both critical elements in preventing serious injuries.
Key changes in the updated NEP include:
- A revised list of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes that define which establishments fall within the scope of the program.
- A provision allowing facilities that were inspected under the NEP in the past 24 months and had no reported amputations to be excluded from programmed inspections.
- Updates to OSHA’s internal data coding procedures to improve tracking and analysis.
This renewed program replaces the previous NEP, which concluded on June 27, 2025, and reinforces OSHA’s commitment to identifying and mitigating hazards that can lead to life-altering injuries in the manufacturing sector.
