ASSP and Safety For Non-Profits (S4NP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in October 2024. The goal: Promote volunteering opportunities while sharing content and amplifying the stories of our members and member communities. Both groups believe the collaboration will foster a larger and more engaged safety community and encourage the sharing of trusted guidance to drive positive workplace safety outcomes.
This MOU is one of several agreements ASSP has with like-minded organizations to support collaboration on a range of initiatives that aim to improve the well-being of workers across all industries. See the latest list of our affiliated organizations here.
What Is S4NP?
S4NP is a non-profit organization founded in 2018. Its volunteers provide pro bono occupational safety and health services to other non-profit organizations. Why this focus on non-profits? It’s estimated that one person dies every week while performing volunteer work. That’s an alarming statistic that S4NP is determined to change by working with groups like ASSP.
Currently, more than 200 safety professionals volunteer with S4NP. This type of activity enables volunteers to give back to their communities, share trusted guidance to prevent injuries and illnesses among those working to help others, and show more people what safety professionals do. All S4NP volunteers are covered with professional liability insurance and receive training, peer quality control, support, tools and mentoring.
Examples of Volunteers in Action
ASSP Greater Boston Chapter Aids Local Furniture Bank

S4NP approached chapter leaders and invited them to participate in volunteer activities. Volunteers also now provide pro bono safety services such as providing information on pedestrian and vehicle traffic control measures, furniture moving body mechanics (ergonomics) and safety orientation for volunteers. These services can be replicated for use with other non-profits as well as job safety analyses for equipment like dock levelers and scissor lifts.
ASSP Arizona Chapter Aids Heritage Square Park
S4NP volunteers provided services focused on slip, trip and fall risk assessment of a non-profit museum and park. Volunteers also reviewed indoor and outdoor risks and provided a written report to park personnel, who used the report to justify repair needs and resulted in budget allocations from the City of Phoenix. They also provided education on incident reporting and fall prevention to park employees and volunteers.
University of Findlay Graduate Capstone Project at St. Caspar Church

S4NP volunteers in the Greater Detroit Chapter, parent chapter for the University of Findlay Student Section, arranged a capstone project for EHS students at a local church in Findlay, OH. S4NP worked with church officials to identify focus areas requiring corrective action and provided students with technical training to complete the site assessments. Graduate students were equipped with comprehensive site assessment skills and knowledge about EHS regulatory requirements. Students’ on-site activities were virtually supervised by ASSP members who were also S4NP volunteers. The church received recommendations to improve EHS aspects of their operations.
