On March 25, 2020, ASSP hosted a webinar, COVID-19 and Risk Assessment, with Bruce Lyon, P.E., CSP, SMS, Vice President with Hays Companies, and Georgi Popov, Ph.D., CSP, QEP, a professor at University of Central Missouri. They are the coauthors of Risk Management Tools for Safety Professionals, an ASSP technical publication.

Lyon and Popov discussed how uncertainty created by a pandemic like COVID-19 can cause business interruption, overload the healthcare system, create supply shortages and increase psychological stress. In addition, They examined the risk pathway—how risk develops—and how organizations can use a risk assessment matrix to identify concerns and implement controls. Lyon and Popov also shared a tool that contains a sample structured what-if risk assessment, risk matrix, layers of control analysis and bow tie risk analysis for COVID-19.
