Who We Are
ASSP’s Academics Practice Specialty member community is committed to advancing occupational safety and health (OSH) in academic and higher education settings. If you’re an ASSP member — and also an OSH student or academician — we’ll help you grow professionally. We’ll also work to influence OSH educational strategies, research, accreditation, professional certification and international academic research.
What We Do
For ASSP members within the Academics Practice Specialty community, we provide the following:
- Networking opportunities via social media groups, conference calls, and in-person meetings like the annual Professional Development Conference and annual Academic Forum so you can connect with other academicians
- Professional development opportunities, including OSH education, mentor relationships that facilitate sharing knowledge, and volunteer and leadership opportunities to build your skills and enhance your resume
- Publish the Journal of Safety, Health and Environmental Research online twice a year, to peer-reviewed theoretical and empirical manuscripts, reviews and editorials devoted to OSH issues and practices
Why It Matters
We believe educating and connecting OSH academics and OSH students — as well as advocating for OSH research, accredited and sound OSH academic programs, and professional certification — help to ensure that OSH is a formal and well-respected course of study that later translates into viable careers and business operations that make workplaces safer and healthier.

Go beyond belonging to the Academics Practice Specialty and volunteer for a position on our advisory committee. Or, consider running to be elected as assistant administrator, which, after two years, leads to the office of administrator. As a volunteer leader, you can lend your time and expertise to our many initiatives, while developing transferable leadership and team-building skills. Our leadership positions help our members reach their highest level of performance, both on the job and in the Society.
