A COVID-19 Update With ASSP President Deb Roy

Dec 08, 2020

A team of infectious disease experts at Oliver Wyman, an international management consulting firm, recently published a report that attempts to answer two common questions:

  1. When will the COVID-19 pandemic be over?
  2. When can we get back to normal?

In Navigating the Long Haul to Normalcy, the experts suggest that fourth quarter 2021 is the likeliest scenario. "The simple answer to 'when can we go back to normal' is that natural infections and vaccinations must confer long-term immunity, and we need enough cumulative immunity present in the population to stop the virus from spreading," the report explains.

On Dec. 7, 2020, ASSP President Deborah Roy, M.P.H., RN, COHN-S, CSP, CIT, FASSP, FAAOHN, shared several insights on two vaccines currently being considered for emergency use authorization in the U.S. and their potential impact on herd immunity.

During a discussion on Nov. 12, 2020, with ASSP board members and members of the staff leadership team about the outlook for 2021, Roy described the three types of therapeutic treatments being used with COVID-19 patients, including antibody cocktails (such as convalescent plasma), antivirals and immunomodulators.
