Jim Thornton, CSP, CIH, Vice President, Council on Professional Affairs, highlights the council's activities and shares how your community can advance these efforts.
We are forming a task force on total worker health. Occupational illnesses and various stressors continue to affect workers, and it's our job to take a holistic approach that can help them be healthy before they enter our workplaces so that they are better able to thrive at work. We will invite comments from all members as we move forward with this important work.
Our Technical and Professional Recognition Committee is examining the Fellow application process. To encourage more members to apply for this recognition, we are working to create a more user-friendly process. Your next chapter meeting is a great opportunity to share the Fellow requirements and encourage chapter members who meet the criteria to apply for this esteemed honor.
Our Government Affairs Committee is focused on stimulating local and regional engagement in government affairs, while maintaining national/international alliances and presence. We hope you are planning activities to participate in Safe + Sound Week, which is Aug. 13-19, to bring wider awareness to workplace safety.
In addition, our Risk Assessment Committee is developing a risk assessment proficiency development road map, a risk assessment tool, and several related videos and trainings that we know will help you and your chapter members learn about and apply risk assessment principles to your workplaces.
These are a few highlights of what the Council on Professional Affairs is doing on behalf of ASSP members. We will continue to use our best efforts and energy to meet the Society’s strategic goals and promote this great profession.
