Central Florida Chapter WISE Members Raise Funds for ALA

May 01, 2019

SU_WISEClimbOur Central Florida Chapter Women in Safety Excellence Common Interest Group members and their families participated in American Lung Association's Fight for Air Climb in Orlando, FL. The team raised more than $2,400 for preventing and curing occupational and other lung diseases.
The team raced up 25 flights of stairs to the top of Orlando's Bank of America building, securing a spot among the top 10 fundraising teams for the Orlando event and in the top 2% of fundraising teams in the southeastern U.S.

To prepare for the event, the team was allowed to use Orange County Fire Department’s Fit Pit, a fitness center that the fire department uses to promote healthy lifestyles for its firefighters. Members of the Orange County Sheriff SWAT team also participated in the climb, some wearing 90 lb of bomb squad gear.

"Since so many lung diseases can be traced back to the work environment, it was a perfect fit for Central Florida Chapter WISE members to participate in an event that will help prevent and cure diseases such as black lung and mesothelioma," says Heather Earl, WISE Content Coordinator and a member of our Central Florida Chapter. "It was a no brainer for us to get involved and we were so pleased to be able to donate $2,400 to the cause. We are already recruiting for the 2020 Climb and have already doubled the size of our team."
