ASSP SIF Prevention Convening Tackles Hazardous Energy Control

Oct 06, 2026

ASSP will bring together safety and health leaders and stakeholders Oct. 7 for a focused discussion on strengthening hazardous energy control and preventing serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs).

Hosted by Master Lock at its headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois, the convening will build on ASSP’s ongoing SIF prevention work and explore practical opportunities to improve how hazardous energy risks are recognized and controlled in the workplace.

The event comes as ASSP expands its collaboration with other leading safety and health organizations around SIF prevention. On Sept. 29, ASSP joined the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Construction Safety Research Alliance at the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Safety Council in a new national SIF Prevention Alliance. The Alliance will support collaboration on information, guidance, training and resources to help employers and workers better identify and prevent serious injuries and fatalities.

The Oct. 7 convening continues work ASSP began earlier this year through SIF prevention convenings in Chicago and Washington, D.C., where safety professionals and industry experts examined persistent challenges associated with falls from height and lockout/tagout failures. Those discussions reinforced the importance of translating established safety practices into solutions that can be effectively implemented at the point of work.

The upcoming convening will take that work a step further. Participants will consider lessons from recent hazardous energy research and practitioner feedback, explore approaches to strengthen hazard recognition and control, and discuss opportunities involving verification, system design, alternative controls and emerging technologies.

Tools such as the Energy Wheel and High Energy Control Assessment (HECA) will help inform the discussion, along with ASSP standards and ongoing practitioner feedback.

ASSP thanks Master Lock for its support as host of the convening and for helping bring together safety and health professionals, industry, government and other stakeholders for this important discussion.

Insights from the convening will help inform ASSP’s continued work to develop practical resources, standards-based solutions and other tools that safety professionals can use to strengthen hazardous energy control and prevent serious incidents. The work will also continue through ASSP’s Standards-Based User Groups (SBUGs) and other efforts to engage practitioners in identifying opportunities to address persistent SIF risks and advance prevention strategies.
