On Demand: Stress: The Hidden Enemy of OSH Improvement

Sep 08, 2026

Over the years, the role of stress seems to have been downplayed in most behavioral approaches when addressing the causes of accidents, injuries, health issues and environmental incidents. Emphasis has been on observable behaviors and the reinforcement of positive or safe behaviors and/or the correction of negative or unsafe behaviors. Though this is essential for the prevention of accidents, injuries, health issues and environmental incidents, it is in no way the complete picture. Today, the sources of stress to the managers, supervisors, and line employees of both large and small businesses are numerous. Attention to and the introduction of effective interventions are needed to counteract the negative effects on safety, health and environmental performance.
