Top honor recognizes leading research and guidance to advance workplace safety
PARK RIDGE, Ill. — April 14, 2026 — The Professional Safety Journal (PSJ) today announced the first-, second- and third-place recipients of its annual Article of the Year award. The recognition honors the journal’s most impactful content, highlighting innovative research, practical guidance and thought leadership that advance the field of environmental health and safety (EHS).
This year’s winning articles address timely and critical issues affecting the safety profession, including heat stress, cognitive bias and safety culture:
- First place: The Heat of the Moment: Recent Litigation Regarding Heat Stress Injuries (August 2024), by Matthew T. Arvin, Esq., CSP
- Second place: Cognitive Bias in Safety Decision-Making: The Influence of Regulatory Frameworks (December 2025), by Antonio Carlos Bacci di Capaci Fiallos, CSP, CHMM, CSHM, and McKell Sanderson, PhD, CSP, CHST, CHMM, ARM
- Third place: SITE Method: A Framework for Strengthening Safety Culture (July 2025), by Nathaniel E. Winkelmann, PhD, CSP
