Google Inactivity Policy: Check Your Account

Oct 06, 2023
If your chapter or region has a Google Drive or YouTube channel, you need to review the changes recently made by Google and take action if necessary.

Google works to prevent unauthorized access to your Google account with its built-in security protections. Keeping you safe means having strong privacy practices that minimize how long Google stores your personal files and any data associated with them.

Therefore, Google is updating the inactivity period for an account to two years across all of its products and services. This change started rolling out July 1 and will apply to any Google account that's not been signed into or used within a two-year period. An inactive account and any content in it will be eligible for deletion from Dec. 1, 2023.

What This Means for You

  • These changes do not impact you unless you have been inactive in your Google account for two years or have not used your account to sign into any Google service for more than two years.
  • While the changes have gone into effect, the earliest Google would enforce any account deletion is December 2023.
  • If your account is considered inactive, Google will send several reminder e-mails to both your e-mail and any recovery e-mails you have provided before taking any action or deleting any account content. These reminder e-mails will go out at least 8 months before any action is taken on your account.
  • After a Google account is deleted, the Gmail address for the deleted account cannot be used again when creating a new account.

Keeping Your Account Active

The simplest way to keep a Google account active is to sign into the account at least once every two years. If you have signed into your Google account in the past two years, your account is considered active and will not be deleted.
