I AM A SAFETY PROFESSIONAL

"Being a safety professional means helping small businesses deal with their safety needs. There are a lot of companies that intend to do good by their employees and by public health, but they just don't know how."

What does it mean to you to be a safety professional?

For me, being a safety professional means helping small businesses deal with their safety needs. There are a lot of well-intentioned companies, and I mean a lot, that intend to do good by their employees, intend to do good by public health, but they just don't know how. Their specialty is the products that they make. My specialty is helping those small companies meet their goals of safety while they focus on what they do best.

What led you to a career in safety?

I always knew I wanted to help people, that's why I chose my Liberal Arts degree to pursue. But then one day I was chosen to be in a jury for a worker's compensation case, and that's when I first learned about the importance of safety in the workplace. I decided to, as a result of being a part of that case, to go ahead and look further into graduate school programs that would be offering concentrations in occupational safety.

How has ASSP helped you as a safety professional?

ASSP has helped me connect with other safety professionals and networks outside of my own. Their publications, the resources, really helped me develop my job skills beyond career training and education.
