    Trump Administration Freezes Regulations Pending Review

    In an e-mail on Jan. 25, 2017, Bruce Lundegren, assistant chief counsel from the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy, advised small business representatives about the Trump administration's "Regulatory Freeze Pending Review” memorandum, which was issued to heads of executive departments and agencies on Jan. 20. The memorandum "is designed to ensure that the President's appointees or designees have the opportunity to review any new or pending regulations."

    ASSE stands behind U.S. Chemical Safety Board

    View From the OSH Bar: Petition to Reopen Silica Rule Unneeded

    On May 3, 2017, a coalition of construction industry associations formally petitioned OSHA to begin a limited reopening of the agency’s March 25, 2016, final rule setting requirements for reduction of respirable crystalline silica in general industry, construction and maritime workplaces. Reopening the silica rulemaking does not make sense at this juncture. The standard’s validity is pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals, and a ruling is expected soon.

    OSHA Inspectors to Assess "Good-Faith Efforts" in Early Days of Silica Enforcement

    Although the Respirable Crystalline Silica construction standard (29 CFR 1926.1153), becomes enforceable on Sept. 23, 2017, compliance officers are, for the first 30 days of enforcement, to evaluate good-faith efforts taken by employers in their attempts to meet the new construction silica standard.

    ASSE signs landmark Singapore Accord to advance global workplace health and safety

    A significant step toward safer and healthier workplaces was taken Sept. 3 when ASSE joined more than 40 organizations from around the world in the landmark signing of the Singapore Accord, which presents a global capability framework for the occupational health and safety professional. It was spearheaded by INSHPO.

    CSHS is encouraging safety and health professionals around the world to let their voices be heard on a key international standard connected to corporate sustainability. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) seeks feedback on proposed updates to GRI 403: Occupational Health and Safety. The comment period is open through Oct. 9.

    OSHA Launches E-Recordkeeping Data Submission Platform

    Aug 08, 2017
    On Aug. 1, 2017, OSHA went live with the data submission platform that certain employers will need to use when submitting their injury and illness (I/I) data to the agency by the revised Dec. 1, 2017, deadline. The requirements arise under OSHA’s electronic recordkeeping rule, which was promulgated in May 2016.

    CSHS study supports standardization of sustainability reporting to improve workplace safety

    CSHS issued a report on its second analysis of how recognized “sustainable” companies report occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities. It's a step forward in showing how global initiatives that index corporate sustainability can include companies’ commitment to safe and healthy workers.
