ASSE pledges to work with its extensive network of members and stakeholders to help address fatal occupational injuries that increased for the third straight year according to newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 5,190 workplace fatalities in 2016, up 7 percent from 2015.

The nation's largest conference for occupational safety and health professionals – expected to draw more than 8,000 people from 40 countries – takes place June 3-6 at the Henry B. The award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to IOSH or the occupational safety and health profession for several years.

ASSE is working with executive search firm Korn Ferry to hire its next executive director. Dennis Hudson, ASSE's current executive director, is set to retire in April after two years in that position and 10 years at the Society overall. His replacement will become the eighth executive director since ASSE was founded in 1911.

ASSE is encouraged after seeing data that shows a decrease in occupational injuries and illnesses, but the world’s oldest professional safety organization knows even more can be done to protect workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that workplace injuries at private industry employers were down by 48,500 cases in 2016.
