President's Message

When a company implements an OHSMS effectively, it can increase its ability to minimize workplace risks and lower the costs of occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

We count on our volunteers to help us develop many of our programs and services. And, our volunteers provide insight about emerging trends affecting our industry. This sustained cycle of volunteerism is vital to the success of the Society, the advancement of the OSH profession and the continuous improvement of workplace safety.

As OSH professionals, we must find innovative ways to engage our corporate leaders and our employee teams to identify risks, then we must design the work to maximize the safety and health of all employees.

As safety professionals, we should do something each day to move the needle on DEI to improve our companies, our communities and ASSP.

When I purposefully remind myself to focus time and attention on what I appreciate about my life, I always feel more satisfied, thankful and happy.

We must meet our current and future members where they are in their career progression to ensure we create a sustained and sustainable pipeline of high-quality OSH professionals serving business and industry.

The creation of the Advisory Group is a key outcome of our historic governance change approved by delegates earlier this year.

Setting member engagement as a top board priority builds on our overall goal to find more opportunities to increase our connections with our volunteer leaders and members.

As OSH professionals, we need to amplify our efforts to make sure our organizations recognize and effectively address the safety and health needs of provisional workers.

We want to create an environment in which diversity of thought and experience is recognized and valued and in which our members feel welcome, safe, seen and heard.

2021-22 ASSP President Brad Giles encourages sharing your unique knowledge, experience and insight beyond the workplace. “You get back more than you give,” he says.

ASSP is building a culture of trust so that members are excited to provide input and share ideas to help advance our Society and our profession.
